External Competitions Explained

EXTERNAL COMPETITIONS

The Society enters a number of local and national competitions each year, both for Projected Digital Images (PDI) and prints.   We encourage all members to contribute and to persevere if their images aren’t selected at first.

Images for all competitions are currently selected by Peter Stevens (HPS chairman), Colin Southgate (who is himself a regular judge) and Torben Cox (HPS external competitions secretary)

Detailed information for each competition will be emailed to society members in good time as they come up.

CACC and PAGB COMPETITIONS

HPS are members of the Chiltern Association of Camera Clubs (CACC) which consists of 39 clubs, from Oxford in the west to Milton Keynes and St Albans and of course ourselves.

The CACC is itself one of 15 Federations of camera clubs that cover the country and make up the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (PAGB).    The federations have approx  1000 affiliated clubs and 40,000 members between them.

Each year the PAGB hold national PDI and print competitions for which the top 2 clubs in each Federation qualify.  So the CACC (our federation) hold their own competitions in January to choose the 2 clubs to represent the Federation later in the year.

The CACC also hold a PDI (projected) competition - the Chilterns Hundred - for individual photographers which are entered via the club.  This competition is held on the same day as the other CACC competitions in January.

The format for all PAGB and CACC PDI competitions is now a 1600x1200px jpg in the sRGB colour space

Park Street Landscape Competition  PDI (projected) competition is an invitational competition which we take part in in October each year.   The format is 1400x1050px sRGB colour space.

Bedfordshire Invitation Inter-Club Competition (for Beds and bordering county clubs) is another PDI (projected) competition held at the end of October / early November each year.  Each club enters between 6 & 9 images and there are trophies for the winning club and for the best image of the Competition.

Ware Cross Border Skirmish – Ware club are in the East Anglian Federation (of the PAGB) and we hold an inter club PDI and print competition each year (taking it in turns to host it) in February.  Honours are even after 2 years so far!

Camera Club of the Year – This PDI competition is organised by the Photography News Newspaper, and consists of 5 rounds in the early part of the year covering different subjects.  The winner of each round goes through to the final, which in 2017 was held at a studio in Daventry at the beginning of June.   HPS have been lucky enough to get through to the final round in both the first 2 years of the competition.
